Kore Community Radio

The Kore community lives in Amaro Special Woreda in the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Regional State (SNNPR).The Woreda has a total land area of 1710 square kilometres. The population is 151,205(WOFED2008). Kellie the main urban centre of the Woreda is located some 478 Kms south of Addis Abeba and 203 Kms south of Hawassa.

Agri-service Ethiopia has been implementing Integrated Food Security Project (IFSP) in several Kebeles of Amaro special Woreda since 2000. ASE strongly believed that the establishment of a community radio can significantly benefit the target community in terms of the provision of information in terms of health, education, women and children’s rights etc. and general community wide awareness creation. The Community Radio programs were produced in the local Korettie language.

Objectives

  • To create access for information;
  • To influence attitude and practice of target communities towards adapting sustainable livelihood and environmental protection;
  • To create awareness on social issues.

Formation and legalization of Association

The Kore Community Radio had to be legally registered to form an association before applying for a broadcasting license. Accordingly, application was submitted to SNNPRS Justice Bureau on July14, 2006. As part of the registration process, Memorandum of Association and Article of Association were prepared and submitted to the Bureau. Supporting letters from regional bureaus like Finance and Economic Development, Information and Culture and Amaro Information and Culture Office were also submitted to the Justice Bureau along with the application letter. The Justice Bureau legally registered and certified Kore Community Radio Broadcasting Association on July 17, 2006 with registration number 208/10/98. 

Inauguration and regular transmission

Kore Community Radio was inaugurated on the 9th of October 2009 in the presence of invited guests and Kore Community members.

Officials from the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority, office of Government Communications Affairs, donor agencies and invited guests from SNNPRS government offices attended the inauguration ceremony. A certificate of appreciation was awarded to contributors.  T-shirts, brochures and leaflets prepared for the occasion were distributed to all present.

The Kore community radio, FM 92.3 went on air transmitting its programme in Korrettie, the language of the Kore community.

Financial support for the Community radio was provided by Information and Communication Assisted Development Project Management Unit (ICTAD).
